On Monday, the college football National Championship game was played between the #1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and #2 ranked Clemson Tigers. Clemson and Alabama played for the National Championship game last year and Alabama won 45-40.
Clemson players thought that they should have won the game last year because they played well until the 4th quarter. The players were looking forward to the rematch with Alabama. Alabama will be without Heisman trophy winner Derrick Henry, who turned pro last season and their quarterback who graduated last season .
Clemson had a lot of returning players for this rematch. The top wide receiver in the nation, Mike Williams did not play in last years National Championship game between the two teams. Williams is most likely going pro after this game so he is looking to end his college career with a Nation Championship.
The first half of the game was all Alabama. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson could not do much on offense. Alabama’s quarterback Jalen Hurts is a true Freshman, this is the biggest game of the career so far and he showed that he is only a Freshman. Hurts and the Alabama offense could not do much in the first half. It was a defensive game in the first half. At the end of the half it was Alabama winning 14-7.
Fast forward to the 4th quarter; Alabama Jalen Hurts scored a go ahead touchdown with just 2 minutes left in the game. Alabama is now up 31-28 with less than 2 minutes left. This was the perfect situation for Alabama, their defense has the change to close out the game. The Crimson Tide historically has the nations best defense in the last decade.
1st round draft prospect DeShaun Watson started the game bad but heading to the 4th quarter he got more comfortable and was ready to lead Clemson to a game-winning touchdown drive against Alabama’s top defense.
With just 6 seconds left, Clemson was at the Alabama’s 2-yard line. Touchdown wins the game and a field goal sends the game into overtime. Clemson lined up to hike the ball instead of kicking the ball. Clemson hiked the ball and DeShaun Watson ran to his right and threw the ball to a wide open receiver; Clemson won the game 35-31.
How did the Clemson wide receiver get so open? Well the referee missed a pass interference on one of the Clemson receivers. Clemson used one of their receivers to ran into an Alabama defender so the other receiver would get open. This is called a “pick play” and if ran perfectly it is not an offense pass interference but the Clemson receiver failed to avoid complete contact with the Alabama defender and ran directly into the Alabama defender.
For a great game to end like this; a missed pass interference call was really disappointing. Some people will say that it was not a pass interference on the offense but others will disagree. The problem I have is; this non call changed the result of the game.
